Walton County Sees Another Near Fatal Car Accident

Accident.jpgTwo men are in the hospital with serious injuries after a traffic crash in Walton County last week. An 18 year old man from Crestview was driving a Ford Focus north on State Road 285 south of State Road 8 around 6:55 a.m. He tried to pass a tractor trailer by continuing north in the southbound lanes of S.R. 285. The FHP report states this is when the Focus collided head-on with the front left of a Chevy Van driven by a 26 year old male from DeFuniak Springs. At least one patient was taken by helicopter to a hospital. The driver of the Focus is charged with improper change of lanes when passing.

Walton County Sheriff's OfficeTeaming Up With Technology

A new technology feature is now available to residents of Walton County - they can receive emergency services through text message. Since March, the Walton County Sheriff's Office has been putting the finishing touches on their new program 'Text 911.' Citizens who are deaf, hearing impaired, or have a speech disability can now send a "short message" or text 911 during an emergency. Also, if you are in trouble, and a voice call might be dangerous or otherwise impossible, texting to 911 is now a safe alternative. When making a voice call dispatchers will receive your phone number and your approximate location automatically. However, in most cases when you text 911 from a wireless phone, the dispatcher receiving the information will not know the texting party's location. Because of this, be sure to text your location as quickly as possible. Residents should check with their wireless phone company before using this new program. Generally, you must have a text-capable wireless phone and wireless service subscription or contract with a wireless company with a "data plan". The Walton County Sheriff's office is the first in Northwest Florida to introduce this new technology.

Walton County Sheriff's Office: New "Text 911" Program

Walton County Sheriff's Office will soon launch a new program called 'Text 911' and only a handful of agencies in Florida use this program (reported by News Channel 7 Panama City). 'Text 911' will allow Walton County Sheriff's Office dispatchers help residents in need. For the past (3) three months, Daniel Carroll, the 911 Coordinator with the department, has been working with the state to bring this program to Walton County. "I currently have the four major service providers; T-Mobile, AT&T, Sprint and Verizon, and SouthernLinc joining us," said Carroll to the reporters.  Sheriff's officials say this is an invaluable asset for victims who are in a situation where they can't call 911, maybe because they need to stay quiet.  It is just another tool to help deputies find the person in need.
