Florida Panhandle car-pedestrian crashes now and in the future

Be careful in harrowing Fort Walton Beach traffic

This week, the Northwest Florida Daily News took a look at what is going on with the traffic problem in downtown Fort Walton Beach. The article looks at the "stop-and-roll madness" endured by motorists trying to get over the Brooks Bridge on US Highway 98 and on all the feeder roads surrounding the area.

The accident occurred near the intersection of Bayfront Parkway and 17th Avenue. Pensacola Police say that around 8:15pm this past Friday night, a Harley Davisdon motorcycle driven by a 48 year old man collided with a Honda Scooter, driven by a 54 year old man. Witnesses told police that the traffic signals in both directions were green. The man who was driving the scooter was transported to a local hospital, where he later died. The individual who was driving the Harley was also taken to a local hospital for treatment. Channel 3 reports that neither driver was wearing a helmet. Unfortunately, people who ride motorcycles and scooters that are in accidents without wearing a helmet get seriously injured the majority of the time. There was a study a couple years back that looked at Florida and the amount of crashes involving moped and scooters occurring between 2002 and 2008. A total of 5,660 moped crashes were evaluated. Of these crashes 18% resulted in severe or fatal injury. In addition, the research found that only 17% of all drivers wore helmets. There has been other studies that show the importance of using helmets while driving scooters or motorcycles.
