How CMV drivers can combat fatigue

Many CMV drivers in Florida and across the U.S. have to struggle with fatigue when on the road, and perhaps they become negligent in not doing enough about it. With the following tips, though, truckers can be more proactive in dealing with fatigue as well as preventing it in the first place.

The only real solution to fatigue, of course, is sleep. Truckers should also avoid driving during those times of the day when the body is naturally tired: for example, between 2 pm and 4 pm and between midnight and 6 am. Diet influences the quality of sleep, so truckers should eat well and regularly. Try not to go to bed with an empty stomach or after a heavy meal. Also, avoid medications that induce drowsiness.

Truckers must be familiar with the signals of drowsiness, such as blurred vision and constant yawning. Studies show that being awake for 18 hours straight is like having a blood alcohol concentration of .08, so drowsy driving can become a lot like drunk driving.

Before it gets to that level, truckers should pull over for a 10- to 45-minute nap. Drinking a caffeinated beverage only boosts alertness for a short time, and the effect will be minimal on regular caffeine users. "Alertness tricks" like rolling down the window and playing loud music are ineffective.

It is important to consider these tips because otherwise, truckers may find themselves to blame for truck accidents. If those collisions involve injury on the other side, the victims may file a claim against the trucking company and be reimbursed for their medical bills and other losses. Victims, for their part, might learn how strong their case is with a legal evaluation. If retained, the lawyer may help build the case up with evidence gathered by third parties.
