Dangerous roads may lead to accidents

Whether you are commuting to work, running errands or out on the town, there are certain factors you know place you at risk. Other drivers who are in a hurry, distracted, or impaired by drugs or alcohol can place your life and the lives of your loved ones in danger at any moment. A malfunction in your vehicle or another driver's vehicle can create an unavoidable hazard. The unpredictable Florida weather may make driving treacherous without warning.

The one thing you may think you can depend on is the safe condition of the roads and highways you travel. Unfortunately, this may be a dangerous assumption and one that may leave you suffering life-changing injuries.

What makes a road dangerous?

Dangerous roads result in accidents all over the state, but certain sections of highway seem to be more prone to accidents than others do. Nevertheless, it is not wise to assume that just because you are not traveling on Highway 98, Highway 95 or Interstate 10 that you are safe. Some factors can make any road into a tragedy waiting to happen, including:

  • Potholes, ruts and other forms of deteriorating road surfaces, often caused by frequent heavy traffic and large commercial and construction vehicles, may make it difficult for a driver to control his or her vehicle.
  • Lines that are fading or otherwise difficult to see can create confusion and danger, especially if it causes drivers to cross into opposing traffic lanes.
  • Construction areas that provide no warning or are difficult to navigate can force you to make drastic decisions at the last moment, placing many lives in danger.
  • Confusing, contradictory or missing road signs create chaos instead of order, especially if stop signs, speed limits and other warnings are not where they can assist you.
  • Missing guardrails and barriers, which are meant to protect you from opposing traffic and other hazards, can increase the chances that you will be involved in an accident.

Sometimes roads simply have a poor design, which prevents you from traveling safely. This may include blind curves, sharp turns, steep drop-offs and other factors that are difficult to navigate. When municipalities fail to properly design or maintain the roadways, you may be the one who pays the price in the form of accident injuries, medical bills and other setbacks.

If you are facing these struggles following an accident on an unsafe road, you may wish to talk to an attorney who can evaluate your case and work to maximize any compensation or insurance claim benefits you may deserve.
