The 15 states with the most cases of teen drinking and driving

Drunk driving causes thousands of car crashes every year in Florida and across the U.S., and drunk driving fatalities make up a third of all driving fatalities. It can be distressing to know, then, that even teens are engaging in the dangerous behavior. According to the CDC, 3.1% of those aged 21 and over report drinking and driving whereas 5.5% of teens report doing so regardless of the amount consumed.

Researchers at CheapCarInsuranceQuotes have determined the states that see the highest percentage of teens who drive after they've been drinking. The study, based on CDC data provided by teens who reported whether they drove after drinking at least once in the previous month, resulted in a ranking of the 15 worst states for teen drinking and driving. Arkansas and Louisiana topped the list with 10.7% and 10% of high school students engaging in the practice.

At the bottom of the list was Idaho with 6% of teens driving after drinking. The drunk driving fatality rates were 4.8 per 100,000 people in Arkansas, 4.7 in Louisiana and 3.5 in Idaho. The national average is 3.4 per 100,000 people. Utah is the safest state with only 2.8% of high school students drinking and driving. Their DUI fatality rate is 1.7 per 100,000 people.

People who are injured at the hands of a drunk driver, regardless of that driver's age, may be eligible for compensation. Florida operates under the rule of pure comparative negligence, so if plaintiffs were at fault for a certain percentage of the crash, the amount they receive in compensation will be lowered by that same percentage.

This is where legal representation may prove beneficial. Victims of auto accidents may have an attorney evaluate the case, hire investigators to strengthen it with evidence and then negotiate for an out-of-court settlement.
