Fourth of July tops all holidays in terms of DUI-related deaths

Florida residents now have an even bigger reason to avoid long road trips during the Fourth of July weekend. It turns out that this holiday is the worst of all major holidays in the U.S. when it comes to DUI-related deaths. Fatalities totaled 1,192 between the years 2010 and 2017. Only Memorial Day came close with 1,105 deaths. The fatality rate for Independence Day was 42.4 per day, whereas Memorial Day's came to 39.5.

It is interesting to note that Labor Day was third with a fatality rate of 38.1. All three occur in summer, which has led AAA to refer to the period between Memorial Day and Labor Day as the "100 deadliest days of summer." However, the Fourth of July is deadly even when compared to an equivalent summer day. The risk for a fatal DUI crash went up 57% on the holiday back in 2017.

When Independence Day falls on the weekend, DUI deaths tend to decline. The average fatality rate is at its lowest on Saturday (36.3) but at its highest on Wednesday (52). For the weekdays in general, the rate is 43.4. As for which holidays are relatively the safest, they are Thanksgiving and Christmas. The DUI fatality rates for those holidays was calculated to be 27.9 and 27.7, respectively.

It's important to note that a crash victim hurt by a drunk driver could be eligible for compensation. Florida follows the rule of pure comparative negligence, so even a victim who is partially to blame may recover damages; although, their degree of fault will reduce the amount proportionately. Filing a personal injury claim can be hard without a lawyer, especially when the time comes for negotiating. That's why a victim may want to schedule a legal evaluation.
