Common reasons for car accidents in the United States

Some car accidents in Florida are nothing more than minor fender benders. Other times, however, crashes caused by human error result in serious injuries or fatalities. As for why such motor vehicle collisions occur, there are some common reasons and contributing factors.

Not surprisingly, distracted driving is one of the top reasons for car accidents in the U.S. While many people associate distracted driving with smartphones, drivers can also become preoccupied while eating, applying makeup or talking to passengers. Consuming alcohol before getting behind the wheel also increases the odds of being involved in an accident because of slower reaction times. Additionally, it's common for some drivers to ignore posted speed limits. Yet the faster a vehicle travels, the more likely it is that a serious collision will occur.

Reckless driving, another common reason for auto crashes, encompasses speeding and other behaviors that can make roadways less safe. Actions like quickly changing lanes, driving erratically and tailgating often cause accidents. Certain weather conditions can also make it dangerous to be behind the wheel. Motorists are even more likely to be affected by Mother Nature if they aren't experienced with driving in heavy rain, dense fog or steady snowfall. Slick roads can also make roads hazardous. Lastly, some drivers who are in a hurry, or simply impatient, may purposely run red lights to avoid having to wait for the next traffic light cycle. However, disregarding lights means a greater accident risk.

The role of a car accident lawyer is to figure out why a collision occurred and who was responsible for it. This process often involves talking to witnesses, obtaining accident reports from the police and insurance companies and checking available data from drivers' devices. If injuries are minor or not lift-threatening, a lawyer may attempt to reach a fair settlement without going to court.
