Are red light cameras causing more rear-end collisions?

Within the last few decades, the pace of life has increased rapidly. People seem to be always in a hurry, and they may take chances while driving in order to gain a few minutes of time. This could include running red lights, which could easily lead to traffic accidents.

In response to this threat, the state of Florida installed numerous red light cameras throughout the state, particularly in the state's more dangerous intersections. The cameras take pictures of those who fail to stop at red lights and send the photos and a ticket to violators through the mail. In the last year since the cameras were installed, word has gotten out that you could end up with a costly piece of mail one day.

The correlation between red light cameras and rear-end collisions

The state installed these cameras in order to reduce the number of T-bone and other serious accidents at intersections. While those numbers may have dropped, it appears that an unintended consequence to the red light cameras has developed -- more rear-end collisions. Now that people know about the cameras, they may slam on their brakes to stop at an intersection at which they would otherwise have run the red light.

In other cases, you may have simply decided to be sure that you stop at red lights to avoid the possibility of receiving a ticket. The driver behind you may not have the same thought and could slam into the back of your vehicle. Proponents of red light cameras say that rear-end collisions are less serious than side impact crashes, but that isn't always the case. Sudden stops could easily cause violent impacts, and you could suffer significant injuries.

These accidents can result in traumatic brain injuries, broken bones and spinal cord injuries, depending on the circumstances. You may not feel the full brunt of these injuries in the first hours or days after the crash. For this reason, it is crucial that you get checked out by a doctor as quickly as possible.

Where to turn for support

While you recover from injuries resulting from a rear-end collision at an intersection, you may incur a substantial amount of medical bills, lost income because you can't work and other economic damages. You may be able to obtain compensation for these losses by filing a personal injury claim in a Florida civil court. To maximize your chances at compensation, it may benefit you greatly to make use of the legal resources available to you.
