Large truck crash deaths went up in 2017, says NHTSA

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration has released its report on fatal car crashes for 2017, and it appears that fatalities went down in every type of accident except in large truck crashes. This should give some Florida residents cause for concern. There may be multiple reasons for this trend, but the report focuses instead on the statistics.

The total number of people killed in traffic accidents went down 1.8 percent from 37,806 to 37,133. Passenger vehicle, motorcycle and pedestrian fatalities saw 1.4, 3.1 and 1.7 percent declines, respectively. The greatest difference was made in speeding-related crash deaths (down by 5.6 percent) and cyclist deaths (down by 8.1 percent).

On the other hand, large truck fatalities went up 9 percent from 4,369 to 4,761. The number of car occupants who died in these accidents rose from 3,644 to 3,920; a 7.6 percent increase. However, the number of large truck occupant fatalities increased by a startling 16 percent. Multi-vehicle crashes involving large trucks went up 8.8 percent.

In its report, the NHTSA defines a large truck as having a gross vehicle weight rating greater than 10,000 pounds. The Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration has stated that many of the trucks involved in fatal crashes may not have been under its regulations because they were less than 26,000 pounds.

It's not just passenger vehicle drivers who can cause accidents with large trucks. Truckers can become drowsy or distracted while behind the wheel, or they can get in a crash because of an improperly maintained truck. A victim of such negligence may want to file a truck accident lawsuit. To help ensure a fair settlement, it may be wise to hire a personal injury attorney.
