Things to keep in mind following a car accident

You just never know when another vehicle is going to slam into yours on the roadway. Florida highways can be extremely cluttered, busy places, and no matter how safe a driver you happen to be, there's not much you can do (if anything at all) about another motorist's actions. You may have already experienced situations where you narrowly averted disaster. Perhaps you noticed a car maneuvering erratically on the highway, so you kept your distance to avoid collision.

You may know what it's like to hit your brakes just in time when another car fails to stop at a traffic light and almost smashes into yours. Most drivers have had near-collisions at some point. It's the time when you weren't able to avoid a crash that may change your life forever. If you suffer severe injuries, your foreseeable future may fill with physical, emotional, economic and legal challenges. That's why if you know ahead of time how to proceed following a collision, you may be able to prevent a lot of stress.

Prioritize and take one step at a time

Some injuries are so serious that many consider it miraculous that the victims survived. If you came to in a hospital bed and have almost no recollection of the events that led to your being there, it's logical to assume your injuries were very severe. Not every injury is immediately apparent, however. Whatever your particular condition, the following tips may be helpful as you navigate the aftermath of a car accident:

  • Remain as calm as possible: Post-traumatic stress syndrome is not uncommon following a serious car accident. Getting the help you need, however, may hinge on your ability to remain as calm as you can so you can think clearly and make informed decisions. An upset feeling is understandable, but the calmer you are, the better, in the long run.
  • Call 911 if you're able: If your injuries do not prevent you from doing so, you should contact emergency services so they can dispatch the appropriate authorities and rescue workers to the scene.
  • Seek medical attention: First responders will likely transport you to the nearest medical facility if your injuries are obvious; they may also ask if you wish to seek medical attention if you appear to be okay. Either way, it's not a good idea to decline medical intervention following a car accident.
  • Document crash details: If you are not able, you can ask someone else to photograph the accident scene, especially if you believe the driver that hit you was negligent. The more details you can remember, the better, should you later file a personal injury claim in court.

It can be very scary recalling the accident that caused your injury. It's not uncommon to have nightmares or insomnia after a collision. In fact, many people seek help from licensed counselors to cope with the trauma of their situations in such cases. You may also wish to speak with someone who is well-versed in personal injury law.

Florida law allows you to seek recovery for your losses by filing a legal claim against the party or parties deemed responsible for the crash that caused your injuries.
