When slow driving is hazardous

Florida residents might think that speeding is more dangerous than driving slowly. While this is true in many cases, there are times when driving too slow is also risky behavior. Both reckless and overly cautious drivers can present challenges to others.

Driving within the minimum and maximum speed limits is the safest best, but one should also determine an appropriate speed by looking at other traffic on the road. Motorists should avoid going substantially slower than other vehicles and watch for those moving at a crawl.

If everyone drove slowly and obeyed the speed limit, then this might make the roadways safer. Since this does not happen, driving slow can be hazardous when a vehicle is in the left lane. Other motorists traveling faster must pass in the right lane, which can cause confusion and lead to accidents.

It is easy to increase speed when turning a corner, and drivers must watch for slow vehicles to avoid catching up to them too quickly. When not aware of slower traffic, one may need to brake fast. This requires others in a lane to brake quick too and could cause a crash or road rage.

Whether they're going too slow or fast, a driver could be responsible for a collision that causes injuries. When car accidents occur, motorists acting negligently may be liable for expenses related to the crash. Some examples of negligence include speeding, texting and driving, tailgating or distracted driving.

Fault may not always be clear cut. For example, one driver may be traveling under the minimum limit when hit by a motorist who was not paying attention to the road and tried to brake quickly. An attorney could evaluate one's case and the chances for recovering damages.
