Further investigation required in fatal Florida boat accident

An in-depth investigation by the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission is pursuing answers and information regarding a recent fatal boating accident near Crab Island. Currently, charges are pending against the driver of the boat for operating a water vessel while under the influence of alcohol.

Reports state that the victim of the accident was a passenger in the boat. He lost part of his leg and then passed away after the driver crashed the vessel into a channel marker located in Choctawhatchee Bay. There were two other passengers in the boat at the time, and both of them suffered minor injuries in the crash.

Details of a tragic accident

At the time of the crash, the deceased was sitting on the bow of the boat. The impact of the boat hitting the channel marker threw him back onto the deck of the boat, causing an amputation of the leg close to the knee. After law enforcement arrived on the scene of the accident, a diver working for the local authorities combed the area for any evidence that could relate to the crash.

The accident remains under investigation by state and local authorities, and law enforcement could seek additional evidence related to the incident.

The rights of individuals hurt in boating accidents

This tragic, preventable accident underscores the danger and serious consequences of negligent or reckless boating. Accidents on the water are complex, and personal injury laws, maritime laws and insurance issues could have an impact on recovery sought by a victim or the family of a person killed in this type of accident.

Boat accidents are rather common in Florida. If you are the victim in one of these unfortunate incidents that was the result of the negligent or reckless actions of another boater or operator, you have the right to pursue compensation. In fact, anyone who experienced an injury or lost a loved one on the following could have grounds to move forward with a civil claim:

  • Privately owned watercraft
  • Charter boats
  • Touring boats
  • Rental watercraft

Individuals who suffer serious injuries in these types of accidents, as well as the family of any person killed in a fatal crash, may have a rightful claim to financial compensation. After a boat accident of any kind, it can be beneficial for you to seek a complete explanation of all legal options available.
