New device aims to keep drivers awake

Statistics from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention show that approximately 6,000 fatal crashes are caused each year by drowsy drivers. While Florida drivers may not face the same stigma when they drive drowsy as they do when they drive drunk, it can be just as dangerous. Attempts to drink coffee or soda or to play loud music to stay awake may only work for a short period of time.

However, one product aims to keep drivers awake and alert at all times. The wearable device is called Steer, and it will both vibrate and shock a driver when it detects that he or she is falling asleep. The product monitors a person's heart rate as well as other biometrics to determine if an individual is awake and alert while operating a motor vehicle.

The creators of the product insist that the electric shock is delivered at a low amperage and does not hurt the person wearing it. Instead, it is meant to act as a warning that the driver should pull over and get some sleep. The product is projected to retail for $230, but those who buy it through Kickstarter can get it for $130. It currently has nearly 100 people backing it on the site.

A car accident victim may be entitled to compensation for current and future medical bills, lost wages and lost future earnings after a crash involving a drunk or drowsy driver. In many cases, driving while tired is considered to be negligent, and an attorney may have several ways to show that drowsy driving played a role in causing a wreck.
