Bicycle Accidents: How To Avoid Being Injured

Bicycle Safety.jpgWEAR Channel 3 reports that a man was left in critical but stable condition after being struck by a vehicle while riding his bicycle. According to the Fort Walton Beach Police Department, earlier this month a 52-year-old male was riding his bicycle north along Wright Parkway and trying to cross the Mary Esther cutoff at the intersection, while outside of an approved crosswalk. The male was then struck by a 2001 Pontiac traveling north. The bicyclist was dressed in dark clothing and his bicycle did not have any light reflectors. Witnesses on scene said they did not see the bicyclist in the roadway after the crash. The man was alert and talking when taken from the scene to the Fort Walton Beach Medical Center for treatment of his injuries. At this time it is unknown if alcohol played a factor in this incident.

We hope this man makes a full recovery.

Did you know that in 2013 in the U.S., over 900 bicyclists were killed and there were an estimated 494,000 emergency department visits due to bicycle-related injuries. The medical cost of injuries to bicyclists is astronomical. The CDC reports that data from 2010 show fatal and non-fatal crash-related injuries to bicyclists resulted in lifetime medical costs and productivity losses of $10 billion.

The CDC provides helpful information on how to avoid being injured on a bicycle:

· Bicycle helmets: Bicycle helmets reduce the risk of head and brain injuries in the event of a crash. All bicyclists, regardless of age, can help protect themselves by wearing properly fitted bicycle helmets every time they ride.

· Active lighting and rider visibility: Fluorescent clothing can make bicyclists visible from further away than regular clothing during the daytime. Retro-reflective clothing can make bicyclists more visible at night. Active lighting can include front white lights, rear red lights, or other lighting on the bicycle or bicyclist. This lighting may improve the visibility of bicyclists.
