Pedestrian Accidents On The Rise

Law Enforcement is scrambling to find a way to reduce the fatalities and find a rhythm or a reason for the horrible accidents.

The Florida Highway Patrol has identified the victim of a hit-and-run accident two weeks ago on U.S. Hwy. 98 as a 24 year old male from of Freeport. The accident happened at approximately 1:50 a.m. on that particular Saturday. The deceased was walking along U.S. Highway 98 at Emerald Shores Boulevard near the Okaloosa and Walton county line when the fatal incident occurred. The accident resulted in the victim being thrown into the grass median.

The driver fled the scene, leaving the deceased lying in the median, where he was found and reported to local law enforcement. The FHP release said authorities were looking for a dark gray metallic 2016 Chevrolet Malibu. The vehicle should have front end damage consistent with a pedestrian collision including a missing driver-side mirror and missing trim. FHP also noted through several media reports that the driver of the car that struck and killed the deceased, and then fled the scene, has been found and is cooperating with the investigation.

The 24 year old male was employed by The Red Bar in Grayton Beach and was the father of two very young children.

On that same morning, charges are pending against a DeFuniak Springs teenager who struck and killed a pedestrian with his vehicle early Saturday morning.

According to Florida Highway Patrol, an 18-year-old male was driving a 1994 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 pickup eastbound on U.S. Highway 90 of County Road 1087 at 5 a.m. Saturday when he began passing another vehicle. During the pass, the left front of the pickup struck a pedestrian walking on the north shoulder of the roadway.

The pedestrian, who was not identified in the FHP news release, was pronounced dead at the scene.

FHP noted in the release that alcohol was not involved in the accident and charges are pending.

Approximately 18 people have been critically injured while riding their bicycles on U.S. 98 in Okaoosa, Walton and Santa Rosa County since January 1, 2015. Read more: Source: http://www.nwfdailynews.com/article/20160524/NEWS/160529534/?Start=2
