RUBBER MULCH: SAFE OR HARMFUL?

Red-Rubber-Mulch-Playground-1000-ffccccccWhite-3333-0.20.3-1.pngI saw this article recently and it made me think of all of the playgrounds in northwest Florida that have rubber mulch. When I first moved to the area, I thought it was a great idea instead of sand or a hard packed surface then I started to wonder if it was really as beneficial as I thought it was when I thought about how hot it gets here and whether or not some of the chemicals could literally rub into my children as they played in it....

Distracted-driving-1000-ffccccccWhite-3333-0.20.3-1.pngThe Northwest Florida Daily News reports that a 43 year old man of Mary Esther was charged with careless driving after a crash on U.S. Highway 331 at 10:30 a.m. Sunday. According to a press release from the Florida Highway Patrol, the man was driving southbound on the highway in a 2001 Hyundai Accent when he started to drift off the roadway in a southwest direction. A witness stated that the driver appeared to overcorrect and get back on the road, entering into the northbound lane where he collided with the front of a 2003 Dodge Ram. The impact of the crash forced the Hyundai into a counterclockwise direction. At final rest, the car was in both northbound and southbound lanes facing northwest. Both drivers and the Hyundai's passenger were wearing seat belts. The crash was not alcohol related, according to the report.

HELMETS CAN SAVE LIVES...

motorcycle-helmets-cruiser-1000-ffccccccWhite-3333-0.20.3-1.pngWEAR reports that a Pensacola man is dead after a motorcycle and scooter accident on Bayfront Parkway. The accident occurred near the intersection of Bayfront Parkway and 17th Avenue. Pensacola Police say that around 8:15pm this past Friday night, a Harley Davisdon motorcycle driven by a 48 year old man collided with a Honda Scooter, driven by a 54 year old man. Witnesses told police that the traffic signals in both directions were green. The man who was driving the scooter was transported to a local hospital, where he later died. The individual who was driving the Harley was also taken to a local hospital for treatment. Channel 3 reports that neither driver was wearing a helmet. Unfortunately, people who ride motorcycles and scooters that are in accidents without wearing a helmet get seriously injured the majority of the time. There was a study a couple years back that looked at Florida and the amount of crashes involving moped and scooters occurring between 2002 and 2008. A total of 5,660 moped crashes were evaluated. Of these crashes 18% resulted in severe or fatal injury. In addition, the research found that only 17% of all drivers wore helmets. There has been other studies that show the importance of using helmets while driving scooters or motorcycles. Ride Smart Florida follows motorcycle crashes around the state and found the following: Helmet Use:
