I have mentioned pedestrian and bicycle safety in my past personal injury blogs, but I felt that an independent and separate blog was necessary to pass along the important information that all motorists, pedestrians and bicyclists should know before getting on and around roads and highways. To be honest, the recent Northwest Florida Daily News Article was the "whisper" in my ear to push this personal injury blog article forward.

For whatever reason (gross inattention, drugs, alcohol, environmental factors, etc.), a man's life was lost on April 8, 2012 after being struck from behind while riding a bicycle. As a motorist, pedestrian, bicyclist, or parent, it is everyone's duty to know the 'rules of the road'. To avoid any unnecessary personal injuries or loss of life, I encourage all readers to visit this website for general safety information:

If the law intrigues you and you wish to have more substantive base of information about what Florida Statutes say about the duties and obligations of pedestrians, visit Online Sunshine.

If you seek more information regarding Florida Statutes that control your rights and responsibilities as a bicyclist, visit Online Sunshine.

Here are some of the highlights of the bicycle regulations under Florida Statutes (summarized), which I personally believe each and every person should know to avoid personal injuries and/or accidents:

(1) Every bicyclist has all of the rights and duties of a motorist.

(2) One person per bicycle (i.e. no riding on handle bars or pegs).

(3) All riders under 16 years of age must wear a bicycle helmet.

(4) No hitching a ride (like Back To The Future) with a motor vehicle.

(5) Bikes must be in bike lane. If no lane, close to the right-hand curb or edge.

(6) Bicyclist cannot ride more than two bicycles wide on the road.

(7) Make sure that you always use a lamp/light (front & back) after sunset.

(8) Bicyclist must yield the right-of-way to any pedestrian on a sidewalk or crosswalk.

(9) No skates, coaster, or similar devices allowed on the road, except crosswalks.

To avoid being injured or being involved in an accident, read some of the highlights from Florida Statutes (summarized):

(1) Pay attention to those traffic control signals for both cars and pedestrians.

(2) If a sidewalk is provided, you better stay off the road.

(3) If a sidewalk isn't provided, walk on the shoulder against traffic.

(4) Motorist at a stop light are not supposed to enter crosswalk.

(5) You are on your own if you suddenly leave a curb and walk into the path of a vehicle.

(6) If you are not in a crosswalk, motorists have the right-of-way.

(7) Pedestrians should walk along the right half of the crosswalk.

(8) No jumping or diving from bridges.
