Avoid these 3 mistakes to drive safely in autumn

The autumn can be a beautiful time of year, but it also comes with a number of dangers. Here are three of the most common problems you can come across on the roads and what you can do to avoid getting into an accident.

Avoid driving in back-to-school traffic

There are few places more congested than a school parking lot at the end of a school day. Hundreds of kids, on average, get released to their parents or their vehicles at the same time. This poses a significant risk to people in the area. The end of the school day means new, young drivers are behind the wheel and frustrated parents have been waiting in line for their kids. If you make the mistake of driving around the school zone at the end of the school day, you're putting yourself at risk of being involved in an accident due to the factors above, distracted driving and other possible issues.

Skip the morning drive or install fog lights

If you can avoid heading out early in the morning, you'll likely be able to avoid hitting the morning fog. This is particularly common around low-lying lakes and harbors where water forms low-lying clouds. Driving through fog can be fraught with danger. Sometimes, you can't see in front of you more than a few feet. If you do have to drive in fog, take it slowly and be sure to use your fog lights to make yourself seen to other drivers.

Don't drive too fast where deer might be traveling

Despite the fact that Florida is known for beaches and sunshine, the truth is that there are around 3 subspecies of white-tailed deer that will migrate in the autumn. Depending on the size of the herd or individual deer, an impact could total your vehicle. Sometimes, particularly heavy deer can even kick through the glass of a person's windshield, putting them at risk of a direct kick in the accident. Avoid getting into an accident with local wildlife by obeying signs signaling that deer might be crossing nearby. Slow down and remember that you need time to stop if you see a deer ahead. If you have people driving too close behind you, pull over or let them pass so that you can focus on what's ahead instead of the person tailing you too closely from behind.

Keep these tips in mind this autumn and avoid some common pitfalls of fall driving. In the case that you are in an accident with another car due to negligence, distracted driving or other cases, speaking with a legal professional can help you determine if you have a case for compensation.
