Pedestrian Deaths In Florida

A pedestrian is dead after he was struck by a car while walking along a road in Jackson County. It happened on Highway 231 near Dionne Road around 8 p.m. Tuesday. Florida Highway Patrol says a 47 year old male was driving on Hwy 231 in a Toyota Tacoma while a 61 year-old male, was walking along the same road. Authorities noted that it was dark with no artificial lighting on the roadway and that the Tacoma traveling in the outside lane, failed to see the pedestrian. After the right front of the truck hit the pedestrian, he was taken to Southeast Alabama Medical Center in Dothan, Alabama, for treatment but was later pronounced dead by hospital staff. The crash investigation continues, according to FHP.

Our thoughts and prayers are with the family of the deceased.

According to the FDOT, about 27 percent of all Florida roadway deaths involve pedestrians and bicyclists. Students are among the most vulnerable, as they often walk or bike to school. Trenda McPherson, the Bicycle Pedestrian Safety Program Manager for FDOT, said that drivers, pedestrians and bicyclists all have a responsibility to help avoid accidents. She said that pedestrians should use crosswalks, bicyclists should ride in the direction of traffic and drivers should be alert to people on foot or on bikes, and share the road with them. McPherson said that dangerous practices like speeding and distracted driving are also major causes of accidents.

According to data compiled by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, Florida was ranked as the worst state for pedestrian fatalities four years in a row. However, Florida is now ranked fifth worst, with a fatality rate of 2.46 per 100,000 in population. FDOT officials said the improvement can be attributed to its efforts to install bike lanes, crossing signals, warning signs and foot bridges across the state.

A detailed breakdown of the age, gender, and location of pedestrian crash victims is available from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) and the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) fact sheets. Some of the more noteworthy trends or numbers are:

· 69 percent of pedestrian killed in 2012 and 2013 were males.

· Almost three out of every four pedestrian fatalities occur in urban areas (73 percent).

· More than a quarter (26 percent) of all pedestrian fatalities occurred between 6 and 8:59 p.m.

· 46 is the average age of pedestrians killed in 2012 and 2013, and 36 is the average age of those injured in 2013.

· 34 percent of pedestrians killed had a blood alcohol concentration of 0.08 g/dL or higher.

· 15 percent of drivers in a pedestrian crash had a blood alcohol concentration of 0.08 g/dL or higher.

· California (701), Florida (501), and Texas (480) lead the nation in total pedestrian fatalities.
