Distracted Driving Is Making Some Think Twice About Driving At All

According to Pew Research, Millennials (ages 18 to 34 in 2015) are projected to number 75.3 million in 2015. That means they will surpass the Baby Boomers (74.9 million) as the nation's largest living generation this year. Research came out several years ago that millennials were not buying cars and they weren't getting their licenses. At the time, the United States was in a recession and the reason this generation wasn't driving was mostly because couldn't afford to. Now, millennials are finally in the market for a car, and they are the second biggest generation buying cars next to Baby Boomers. But they still don't want to drive because they're afraid of other drivers.

Ford Motor Co. recently hired an independent research company, Penn Schoen Berland, to survey 1,000 drivers in Gen Z (ages 16 to 22) and Gen Y (ages 23 to 34). The company discovered that public speaking and death have been displaced as the top fear. A whopping 88 percent of respondents said that their No. 1 fear is other motorists driving dangerously. They know that driving habits are changing because of the growing inclusion of technology in our lives.

Research has shown what people are doing while driving:

61 percent: Texting

33 percent: Sending email

28 percent: Searching the internet

27 percent: Looking at Facebook

What's more is that 27 percent of the people who take video while driving think they can do it safely, and 30 percent of the people who tweet and drive do it all the time.

According to AAA, federal estimates suggest that distracted driving leads to about 5,000 deaths every year. Even though the average commute time to and from work is about 25 minutes, we still have a huge amount of tragic accidents as a result of distracted drivers.
