Happy Fourth of July! Safety First When It Comes To Fireworks

Fourth of July is here and too many of us forget that fireworks are dangerous explosive devices. New numbers from the U.S. Consumer Products Safety Commission show that fireworks deaths rose in 2014, killing nearly a dozen people and sending more than 10,000 to the hospital. Always follow safe practices around fireworks whether you are attending a professional production or using consumer fireworks in your driveway.

Recently, Elliot F. Kaye, chairman of the CPSC, joined the Today show to show viewers how dangerous fireworks are to individuals.

The CPSC suggests that as you use these guidelines if you decide to participate in firework festivities:

· Make sure the fireworks you want to buy are legal in your area before buying or using them

· Never allow young children to play with or ignite fireworks, including sparklers

· Do not buy fireworks that are packaged in brown paper, which is usually a sign that the fireworks were made for professional displays.

· Never place any part of your body directly over a fireworks device when lighting the fuse. Back up to a safe distance immediately after lighting.

· Keep a bucket of water or a garden hose handy.

· Never try to relight or handle malfunctioning fireworks. Soak them with water and throw them away.

· Never point or throw fireworks at another person.

· Light fireworks one at a time, then move away from them quickly.

· After fireworks complete their burning, douse the spent device with plenty of water from a bucket or hose before discarding the device to prevent a trash fire.

Here at Brannon & Brannon, we want all Americans to have a safe and enjoyable Fourth of July.
