Injury To Minor: Furniture as a Playground

Avoid injury to minor children, by establishing a safe environment at home.As most of us know, children like to climb on furniture. With their creative little minds, furniture becomes a playground, a place for them to swing, jump and slide. Unfortunately, using furniture as a playground causes serious injuries to children.

Between 2000 and 2011, 349 people, most of them children, died when they were hit by furniture, appliances or TVs.The Consumer Protection Safety Council (CPSC) is urging parents to properly secure their TVs, including flat screens, and to avoid placing items on top of them, like toys and remote controls, that could entice children to climb up. According to CPSC, one child dies every two weeks from falling furniture or a television. When a TV falls from an average-size dresser, it can crash with the force of thousands of pounds, according to a new study conducted by the agency. Consumers can watch a video on television safety on the agency's website. Take simple, low-cost steps to secure furniture and TVs to save lives. These three words are key to childproofing your furniture and TVs: Anchor and Protect.

To prevent a tip-over tragedy:

  • Assess the stability of the TVs in your home.
  • Mount flat-panel TVs to the wall to prevent them from toppling off stands. Follow the manufacturer's instructions to ensure that you have a secure fit.
  • If you have a heavier, box-style cathode ray tube (CRT) TV, place it on a low, stable piece of furniture that is appropriate for the TV's size and weight.
  • If you no longer use your CRT TV, consider recycling it. To find a location to safely and easily recycle unwanted TVs.
  • Use brackets, braces or wall straps to secure unstable or top-heavy furniture to the wall.

Please take the necessary precautions to secure all TVs in your home. The safety of your children and your own peace of mind are well worth the time and effort. If you have been injured in an accident, contact the attorneys at Brannon & Brannon.
