HELMETS CAN SAVE LIVES...

motorcycle-helmets-cruiser-1000-ffccccccWhite-3333-0.20.3-1.pngWEAR reports that a Pensacola man is dead after a motorcycle and scooter accident on Bayfront Parkway. The accident occurred near the intersection of Bayfront Parkway and 17th Avenue. Pensacola Police say that around 8:15pm this past Friday night, a Harley Davisdon motorcycle driven by a 48 year old man collided with a Honda Scooter, driven by a 54 year old man. Witnesses told police that the traffic signals in both directions were green. The man who was driving the scooter was transported to a local hospital, where he later died. The individual who was driving the Harley was also taken to a local hospital for treatment. Channel 3 reports that neither driver was wearing a helmet.

Unfortunately, people who ride motorcycles and scooters that are in accidents without wearing a helmet get seriously injured the majority of the time. There was a study a couple years back that looked at Florida and the amount of crashes involving moped and scooters occurring between 2002 and 2008. A total of 5,660 moped crashes were evaluated. Of these crashes 18% resulted in severe or fatal injury. In addition, the research found that only 17% of all drivers wore helmets.

There has been other studies that show the importance of using helmets while driving scooters or motorcycles. Ride Smart Florida follows motorcycle crashes around the state and found the following:

Helmet Use:

  • In 2011, helmet use in Florida was observed at 49.3 percent.
  • Since the repeal of the helmet law in 2000, the number of fatal crashes for every 10,000 registered motorcycles increased by 21 percent, suggesting motorcyclists without helmets are more likely to suffer serious and fatal injuries.
  • 53 percent of motorcyclists were not wearing a safety helmet before a fatal crash during 2011.
  • 29 percent of motorcyclist fatalities were related to traumatic brain injuries between 2007 and 2010.

It also found the attraction to motorcycles is not just limited to teenagers or young adults. In fact, during the past decade, the proportion of aging riders involved in motorcycle crashes has been slowly increasing. In 2013, the 55+ age group represented about 20 percent of all motorcycle crashes in Florida which was almost double from 2004.

Our thoughts and prayers go out to the families of the individuals in this horrific accident. We hope everyone does their part to keep the road safe for all users. Wear a helmet, be aware. Everyone can do their part.
